Post Registration Guidelines for particpants

The competition focuses on kIrtanam rendition only, and no manOdharmam (e.g. rAgam/neraval/kalpana svaram) is expected.

The competition is divided into 3 categories: sub-Junior (8-10), junior (11-14), and senior (15-25). (Age completed as of 1st August, 2024)

Any dIkshitar kIrtanam is allowed EXCEPT FOR "Nottu Svarams". For the sub-junior category, 3 dIkshitar kIrtanams are expected, for juniors, 5 dIkshitar kIrtanams, while for seniors, 10 kIrtanams are expected.

The competition has 2 levels – Prelims and Finals. Participants selected for the finals may be asked to learn new kIrtanams (for junior and senior categories) – the exact kIrtanams would be announced when the finalists are announced.

All the above levels would be held on the Zoom Video/Audio conferencing - the details of which would be shared prior to the event.

The prelims would be held on Aug 24th, 25th, and Sep 31st for participants from India and on Sep 8th, 9th for global participants.

You would be receiving an email on your registered email, with your allotted batch. Any request for a change in allotted batch, should be made by email, to dikshitar.competition@gmail.com well in advance. We will try our best to accommodate change requests, subject to judges’ consent.

The finals would be held on Oct 19th for India, and Oct 20th for Global participants – again on Zoom only.

The prize distribution function would be on November 10th as part of the DIkshitar Day celebrations at Raga Sudha Hall, Mylapore, Chennai.

The focus is on a clean and clear rendition of the KIrtanam (NO Manodharmam aspects such as Ragam/Neraval/Svarams are expected)

It is recommended that the contestants know the musical as well as lyrical aspects of the kIrtanams, to the best possible extent and as advised by their Guru.

The judge(s) would ask the contestants to sing a portion of one or more of the kIrtanams they have come prepared with.

Please ensure that the Tambura/Shruti Volume is set to a reasonable level before singing

We recommend that children below 18 years of age, be accompanied by an adult during the course of the competition.

The competition may be streamed on FaceBook and/or Youtube

The judges would be short-listing contestants for the Finals. The exact number of contestants short-listed would be at the discretion of the Judges.

There would be two sets of Prizes - one set for contestants based IN India and the other set for those based OUTSIDE India. The number of prizes, as in the past, is based on the discretion of the judges.

The participants acknowledge that the decision of the judge(s) and the organisers shall be binding on all participants.

The list of kIrtanams is NOT required at the time of registration but only at the time of the competition. Please select kIrtanams that your Gurus vouch to be authentic. It is NOT mandatory for you to pick only compositions listed above – however, it serves as one confirmed source of DIkshitar KIrtanams, for your reference.

Please come prepared with the list of songs (with rAga and tAla names clearly called out) typed out in a notepad/document. You will be asked to paste it when your turn is called out, during the competitions.

We would not be able to provide any individual feedback about participants, after or during the competitions.
